AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Let me introduce you to AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Last fall, I had an incredible opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia for three months. Despite my limited knowledge of the country at the time, I was eager to immerse myself in a new culture, connect with new people, and make the most of my time there.

During my stay, I prioritized traveling around the country, discovering new places, and meeting new people.

One of the most unforgettable experiences was visiting AlUla, a region with over 200,000 years of human history and one of the largest archaeological sites in the world.

Here are some interesting facts about AlUla:

  • It is home to the ancient city of Hegra, the first World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia.

  • Renowned for its rock formations formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago and inhabited by various civilizations, including the Nabataeans, the Lihyanites, and the Thamud.

  • Known as the "open-air museum" of Saudi Arabia due to its numerous archaeological sites and rock art.

While in AlUla, I attended the Five Senses Sanctuary, a yoga retreat set amidst the stunning and tranquil landscape. I participated in yoga classes, meditations, and workshops led by instructors from around the world, which challenged my physical and mental boundaries. Through these activities, I was able to release pent-up frustrations and tensions and experience deep emotional release and relaxation.

Apart from the retreat, I also had the opportunity to explore AlUla Old Town. I visited charming shops offering local products and admired stunning art installations. During the night, I joined a group for dinner at Somewhere, a wonderful restaurant.

I embarked on a tour of Hegra with a group of lovely people I met at the retreat. We rode in the back of a vintage Land Rover, accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who shared insights into the site's history.

As a solo traveler, I relished the unique opportunity to connect with myself and others, participate in activities, and feel truly inspired. The vibrant community of individuals from various backgrounds, professions, and ages provided me with refreshing perspectives on life.

My time in AlUla was an unforgettable experience. As a solo traveler, I highly recommend attending a yoga retreat in an unfamiliar location to anyone seeking a meaningful and unconventional experience. If you ever find yourself in Saudi Arabia, I highly recommend adding AlUla to your list of must-visit destinations.
